How they behave and move around has a direct influence on us whether we are aware of it or not. In communication, we are generally focused on the face. For this reason, emotion research in the past has focused on faces. Also, facial expressions seem to have universal consistency. However, bodily expressions are just as well recognized as facial expressions, they can be seen from a distance and are from evolutionary perspective much older. Body language therefore has a high communicative role 3 albeit we are less aware of it. Models on facial expression processing might also work for understanding bodily expressions. Similar brain regions seem to get activated for both, but although faces show the mental states of people, body postures in …

The role of language in emotion: predictions from psychological constructionism
Common sense suggests that emotions are physical types that have little to do with the words we use to label them. Yet recent psychological constructionist accounts reveal that language is a fundamental element in emotion that is constitutive of both emotion experiences and perceptions. According to the psychological constructionist Conceptual Act Theory (CAT), an instance of emotion occurs whe...
متن کاملThe Relationship of Language and Emotion: N400 Support for an Embodied View of Language Comprehension
According to embodied theories, the symbols used by language are meaningful because they are grounded in perception, action, and emotion. In contrast, according to abstract symbol theories, meaning arises from the syntactic combination of abstract, amodal symbols. If language is grounded in internal bodily states, then one would predict that emotion affects language. Consistent with this, advoc...
متن کاملEmbodying emotion.
Recent theories of embodied cognition suggest new ways to look at how we process emotional information. The theories suggest that perceiving and thinking about emotion involve perceptual, somatovisceral, and motoric reexperiencing (collectively referred to as "embodiment") of the relevant emotion in one's self. The embodiment of emotion, when induced in human participants by manipulations of fa...
متن کاملAre we truly mirrors of emotion? Studies of embodied emotion perception of outgroups
Current ‘embodied simulation’ approaches to emotion perception suggest that individuals classify another person’s emotions in a three-step process: (i) observers automatically mimic a target’s facial expression, (ii) this motor activation generates the corresponding emotion in the observer, and (iii) the observer attributes his or her current emotional state to the target. In this study, we arg...
متن کاملPerceiving Bodily Expressions: Differential Effects of Human & Non-human Forms
Theories in embodied cognitive science emphasize the importance of self-other mapping during emotion perception. This implies the body form through which an emotion is expressed may impact how the emotion is perceived. Research in human computer interaction has demonstrated that people can reliably label emotions of virtual characters; however, it has hardly examined how people perceive the emo...
متن کاملAn Aesthetics of Nature Consequences of Merleau-Ponty’s embodied ontology
In his courses on Nature, the French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty clearly does not agree with Kant's antropocentrism. In particular the Kantian notion of the disinterestedness of aesthetic perception is untenable in an aesthetics of nature which is inspired by Merleau-Ponty's thought. Nature and human embodiment are seen as separated in this Kantian tradition. In Merleau-Ponty’s pheno...
